A new law has been implemented today on July 7th to require every new car sold in the UK to be equipped with an Intelligent Speed Assist System (ISA). This policy was first suggested in 2022, but was for new car models. This new law applies to all new cars sold in the Eu and Northern Ireland only currently. It does not consider when the car model was first launched, as long as they can still be bought new. The law also requires older cars that are being re-sold to have the system fitted as well.
The ISA system has been created and implemented as an attempt to impose stricter rules on speeding on roads. It uses a GPS and speed limit sign recognition cameras to work internally to identify the speed limit of the area the car is driving in. The car’s accelerator will then be pushed back against the driver’s foot to notify them of their speeding and to reduce the speed of the vehicle at the same time. The ISA will also provide audio and visual warnings of excess speeds as well.
This law is hoped to reduce the number of road deaths that are caused as a result of speeding.
While this law currently exists in Northern Ireland, it is expected that new cars in England, Scotland and Wales will also have the ISA system to support the law in Northern Ireland anyway.
