Indie group formerly known as ‘Easy Life’ have officially announced their new name after losing to airline EasyJet in October 2023.
The band, formed in 2017 with members Murray Matravers, Sam Hewitt, Jordan Birtles, Oliver Cassidy, and Lewis Berry, took to X, formerly twitter, in October last year to announce they were being sued saying ‘Never imagined having to do this but we’ve no choice but to address the situation we find ourselves in. ‘As some of you have already discovered, we are being sued. easyJet is suing us for being called Easy Life. They’re forcing us to change our name or take up a costly legal battle which we could never afford.’ They added to the statement by trying to make light of their legal battles with ‘For those of you who bought gig tickets and ended up on a budget flight to Tenerife, I apologise. For the rest of you, thank you so much for your support.’
The artists have since re-named themselves to become ‘Hard Life’, with their announcement coupled with the release of a new song titled ‘Tears’. They again took to X to announce their update with the statement ‘hey it’s been a while. safe to say the last 9 months haven’t been easy. new song tears out now.’
The new single has been rumoured to take a jab at the airlines company and its founder Sterlios Haji-Ioannou in the lyrics ‘It was easy in my twenties, now I got to lawyer up / Give me air-miles or a fair trial, Stelios.’
The BBC claims that EasyGroup’s lawyers have called the lyrics referring to Stelios as ‘defamatory’, and have said it breaches the band’s settlement with the airline company. The lawyers have allegedly expressed their ‘disappointment’ at Hard Life’s decision in the lyrics and have said it was done in an attempt to ‘needlessly refresh the dispute, which the band chose to settle several months ago’.
The band have removed their previous Instagram page under their former name ‘Easy Life’, with just under 200,000 followers. They are now in the middle of planning a tour with festival appearances due as well.
